Overview of Black Lab Linux 4.1.9 KDE

An overview of Black Lab Linux 4.1.9 KDE. We go over some of the changes as well as the application line-up. Enjoy

Black Lab Linux 4.1.9 KDE released

Today we are pleased to announce Black Lab Linux 4.1.9.  This release showcases our efforts with the KDE desktop.

While KDE was our secondary desktop and only had an occasional focused release, KDE will have a refocus.  We will have a KDE and XFCE based release for every major and incremental release.  Our optimized KDE will become the default desktop for Black Lab Enterprise Linux and Black Lab Enterprise Server.

So with those announcements, lets get to this specific release.   Based on a heavily modified Kubuntu base system we offer the best the KDE community has to offer.  With this release we focus on optimizing KDE so that it runs on the same class of hardware as our XFCE release.  We also work on providing the same tools as our XFCE release so we have a mix of QT and GTK based apps.  with this release we have also updated the kernel and contains all the bug fixes and driver database as our main release.

This release has the following features

  • Customized KDE 4.11.3
  • Muon Software Center and Muon Package Installer
  • Gimp
  • Chromium Browser 31
  • Steam Client
  • Thunderbird e-mail client
  • Lightning Extension
  • Digikam
  • Krusader
  • Dropbox
  • Libreoffice
  • VLC
  • JuK
These and many more enhancements and features we have included in this release.

You can download this release from our Sourceforge page

Black Lab Linux 4.2 Beta 2 released

Today we are releasing Black Lab Linux 4.2 Beta 2.

Beta 2 has many functionality fixes, and many bug fixes that we have worked on since the release of Beta 1.  Users of Beta 1 must upgrade their systems through the ISO, after this Beta we will be testing the new update system which will allow you to install your updates to the new release without having to reinstall.

Here is a list of things that we have fixed in Beta 2:

  • The lock screen bug:  The lock screen in some instances when going back to the desktop would freeze the system forcing a reboot.
  • Network Manager would not show a stable connection when connected
  • Display bug where only half the desktop wallpaper was being shown is now fixed.
  • USB crash has been fixed, in some instances if you would plug in 5 consecutive USB devices the system would crash
  • The ASUS EeePC hot keys have been fixed.
  • XServer crashes on VirtualBox are now fixed.
  • Backporting of drivers now 95% complete.
  • Chromium lag is now fixed

And a few other smaller fixes that just plagued some users have been fixed.

This release is not feature complete yet, there are still some features missing.  Beta 3, being released December 29, 2013 will bring this beta to a close and we will have 1 RC candidate in mid January 2014.

Today we are also releasing the Black Lab Enterprise Linux 4.2 Beta 2.  If anyone would like to test that release send us an e-mail and we will be glad to send you information on enrolling in that Beta program.  To enroll in the Black Lab Enterprise Linux beta the cost is $40.00, plus you get a free copy of Gold with one license when its released in late January.  Just donate $40.00 USD and put in the notes that you want to Beta test Enterprise and a download link will be e-mailed to you.

If you would like to contribute to us during the beta test period you can donate to the project, send us bug reports and follow our progress.

Malware and Documentation library has changed

Apparently someone has put spyware or malware on ibiblio.org so the library was giving a false positive on some browsers malware blocking.  We have corrected the issue and reported it to ibiblio and to Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Apple etc.  We take the subject rather seriously and we do not offer any software that has Adware, Malware, or Viruses and all our software is 100% Spyware free.

What we have done is move the documentation over to a new library and all those links have been changed so you will no longer get those errors.  We have inserted the donation links into the web pages as they were before.

Christmas Wallpaper

Here is our Christmas wallpaper for Black Lab Linux.  I hope you guys enjoy it.   BTW, you can use it on any distro you would like or for that matter any OS that you would like.

Remembering Nelson Mandela

As many of you know Nelson Mandela has passed.  Such a memorable man, leader and advocate for peace has left us.  For Linux users many of you might remember Nelson Mandela's video on Ubuntu that was included in well, Ubuntu.

While Nelson Mandela was many different things to his own people, the world had the great gift of being alive and able to witness his many good deeds and to be inspired by Nelson Mandela.  At 95, he lead a long life and he was able to live long enough to see many of his dreams come true and that is something many human beings don't get to see.

We at PC OpenSystems LLC and Black Lab Linux extend our most heartfelt condolences to Nelson Mandela's family, friends, and to everyone who was touched by this mans life whether directly or indirectly.

Christmas Season is upon us

With the Christmas season upon us we would definitely like to thank everyone for a great year.  You made us your Linux distribution of choice and we appreciate it so very much.  Its definitely been a year of trials and tribulations.

So make sure you have a safe holiday season and remember what the true spirit of the Christmas is.  Its about togetherness, its about family and sharing.  So with that we want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.  For those of you looking for great gift ideas visit the OpenSystems Marketplace for some great gift ideas.

For those of you that want Black Lab Linux oriented gifts you can go to our preinstalled systems section and our where to buy section to get systems preinstalled with Black Lab Linux or to get a LiveUSB or LiveSD card to install Black Lab Linux.
