OS4 Education Initiative K-12 Announced

Today we are announcing the development and production of the OS4 Education Initiative K-12.  I have deep roots in education.  My mother is a retired teacher, my Aunts are or retired teachers and my Fiance is a teacher.  Walking through the halls of these educational facilities what do I see.  I see a lot of PC's and computers with major problems.  Some of them have crashed and are being worked on, students have downloaded all kinds of harmful software on these PC's and they are being worked on or in many cases these systems are severely outdated.  So here at PC/OpenSystems, we were wondering, where is the one place OS4 can definately make the grade?  Thats with the education sector.  Now Linux is a wonderful system but its utilized very little in primary and secondary schools and talking with some of my friends who are in the educational field, why is this so?

1.  Microsoft sells licenses for the school systems at little cost but the upgrade licenses are so expensive and cost prohibitive that keeping machines up to date is near impossible

2.  In the case of Apple they do provide us with machines and software at a relatively low cost but the upgrades are so expensive its cost prohibitive.

3.  I hear, "Whats Linux?" and I also hear "Linux is too hard for the students to learn"

4.  We need a system thats easy for our administrators and IT staff that its basically a no brainer and Linux with all the command line stuff is definitely not easy.

So I took all that information and I asked myself the same question 5 or 6 times, what can we do to meet the requirements and expectations of primary and secondary schools?  And it hit me, we have the solution.  I answered the same question when our corporate customers asked us for the same thing, the answer was OS4 Enterprise.  But wait a minute, OS4 Enterprise in an educational setting is like taking a bazooka to kill a fly.  So what is the OS4 Educational Initiative K-12?  Well what we will be doing is developing a special branch of OS4 OpenDesktop specifically for the duty of being deployed in primary and secondary schools.  It will be based on the LTS technology we have honed for the enterprise but yet be deployable in schools.  It wont have any of the server facilities but will have educational software preloaded and be affordable so that school systems can afford the upgrades and can be deployed easily and efficiently, with very little downtime and a relatively little maintenance.  So any of you guys that are in the educational field, give us some feedback.  Let me know either through e-mail or personal contact what you would like to see.  Tomorrow, February 22, 2013 we will start planning this product and next week we will be back to give you some of the feedback we have received.
